Présentation du Quartier Libre / About the Free Quarter Lentilleres

About the Free Quarter Lentilleres
The free quarter of the Lentilleres was born from a demonstration in
Dijon in 2010, after which some several hundred people came to clear and
then cultivate some of the 9 hectares of the city’s only remaining, but
long abandoned, agricultural land. This land is still threatened by a
housing construction project. From that birth came the Pot’Col’Le; an
open and collective gardening project based on the dynamic of knowledge
exchange. The Jardin des Maraicheres, driven by volunteers, provides
food for a not-for-profit, free-price weekly market. Criss-crossing
these two big parcels of cultivated land there are some thirty
individual gardens. In the middle of all of that are several occupied
farms, as well as outbuildings, cabins, yurts and other forms of light
construction that are home to around 70 people, organised into numerous
different collectives, who take care of this land in different ways.
This space is open to all, to take a walk, to come and play (the pirate
ship play area marks the southernmost point of the space), to attend
different kinds of workshops, to come for concerts or parties of
different kinds. All of that gave birth to a variegated quarter; one
where a variety of collectives flourish, that are themselves nourished /
supported by several hundreds of people.

However all of this is threatened: la SPLAAD (the department of urban
planning in Dijon) and the City of Dijon wants to destroy this dynamic
creative space that is the kind of quarter we would want to live in,
outside of established frameworks, and replace it with a housing project
that they call an ‘eco quarter’; the ‘écocité des maraîchers’. The first
phase of construction started on an adjoining piece of old industrial
land, but we continue to oppose the second phase of construction which
concerns the free quarter. We are, more than ever, determined to fight
that solidarity overcomes business. Come join us!

You can contact us at: tierraylibertad(at)potager.org
Or you can come and find us directly on site. The market takes place
every Thursday from 5pm till 7pm, June till November. Public events and
concerts take place at the Snack Friche (8 rue Amiral Pierre), or the
Grange (45 rue P. Guignard).
Don’t hesitate to come and take a walk here, even when there isn’t a
public event (keeping in mind respect for everyone who lives here)!
